Breeder Partnerships

Ethical Breeder Screening Application

Therapy Puppies partners only with breeders who meet a documented standard of health, welfare, and transparency. This application is the first step of a multi-stage review: every submission is verified — we contact your veterinarian, check registrations and licences, review health-testing documentation, and conduct a live facility walkthrough (in person or by video) before any partnership is approved. Incomplete applications are not reviewed.

Our non-negotiable standards

  • Breed-appropriate health and genetic testing on all breeding dogs, with verifiable results (OFA / PennHIP / registry databases)
  • No sales through pet stores, brokers, auctions, or third parties
  • Puppies remain with their dam until at least 8 weeks of age
  • Lifetime take-back commitment for every puppy produced
  • Open-door policy: buyers and our team may visit where dogs are raised
  • Full compliance with all applicable federal, provincial, and municipal requirements — including the Animal Pedigree Act where puppies are sold as purebred
1Breeder & Business Information

This must be the actual location where breeding dogs and litters are raised — it will be the site of the facility walkthrough.

2Licensing, Registration & Compliance
Do you hold a municipal or provincial kennel / breeder licence for your operation? *

Kennel and breeder licensing in Canada is set at the municipal and provincial level. Write "not required" only if that is genuinely the case — we verify against your municipality's bylaws and your province's requirements.

If you sell puppies described as purebred, the federal Animal Pedigree Act requires them to be registered (e.g. with the Canadian Kennel Club). Tell us how you comply — or state that you do not sell puppies as purebred.

Do you follow the CVMA's Code of Practice for Canadian Kennel Operations? *
Have you ever been cited, fined, suspended, or investigated by a provincial SPCA or animal-welfare authority (e.g. Animal Welfare Services, BC SPCA), animal control, the CKC, or any other registry? *
3Health & Genetic Testing

E.g. OFA hips/elbows, cardiac, patella, eye (CAER), and breed-specific DNA panels. "Vet checked" is not a health test and does not qualify.

Do you remove dogs from your breeding program when testing reveals a heritable issue? *

We will call this clinic to confirm the care relationship. By submitting this form you authorize your veterinarian to confirm it.

Duration, what is covered, and the remedy offered. Guarantees requiring the buyer to return the puppy to receive any remedy should be flagged — tell us if yours works that way.

4Breeding Practices

Describe specifically: kept as pets, placed in screened homes, etc. "Rehomed" without detail is insufficient.

Health clearances, temperament, conformation, coefficient of inbreeding, breed-standard goals…

5Facilities & Daily Welfare
Where do your adult dogs live? *
Do you allow puppy buyers to visit the property where puppies are raised? *
6Socialization & Temperament

E.g. Early Neurological Stimulation, Puppy Culture, Avidog; exposure to surfaces, sounds, handling, children, other animals.

Especially relevant for therapy-prospect placements: how do you identify stable, people-oriented, low-reactivity puppies?

Earliest age at which a puppy leaves your care *
7Placement & Lifetime Responsibility
Do you sell, or have you ever sold, puppies through pet stores, brokers, dealers, online marketplaces, or auctions? *
Will you take back any dog you produced, at any age, for any reason? *

9Attestations

Each statement below is a condition of partnership. Checking a box you cannot honor is grounds for immediate and permanent removal.

Submitting this application does not create a partnership. Applications are reviewed in stages — document verification, reference calls, and a facility walkthrough — and approval is at Therapy Puppies' sole discretion. Information you provide is used only for screening and is not shared publicly. All chosen applicants are reviewed annually to ensure they still meet our standards.
