Is Puppy Yoga Ethical? How Our Puppies Are Cared For

Puppies resting and playing freely during a puppy yoga class

"Is puppy yoga ethical?" is the most important question anyone can ask about this category — and if you're asking it, good. The honest answer is: it depends entirely on how the operator runs it. Here's how we run it at Therapy Puppy Studio, and what we'd encourage you to ask of anyone offering puppy yoga, including us.

Where our puppies come from

We partner with trusted breeders who prioritize the health and wellbeing of their puppies — partners who raise them in safe, attentive environments and follow appropriate veterinary care and early socialization practices. For young puppies, well-run socialization with calm humans isn't just harmless — positive early exposure to new people, sounds, and environments is part of raising a confident adult dog.

How classes are structured around the puppies

The single most important rule in our studio: the puppies choose. During every session, puppies are free to rest, play, or step away from interaction whenever they want. Nobody places a puppy into a guest's arms on demand, and a puppy that wanders off to nap in a corner gets to nap in the corner.

Around that rule, everything else is designed to keep sessions calm and comfortable:

  • Small class sizes with a minimum 1:2 puppy-to-attendee ratio, so no puppy is ever crowded.
  • Gentle, calm engagement — guests are coached to let puppies come to them.
  • A controlled, sanitized space — we provide freshly sanitized mats and ask guests not to bring their own, specifically to protect the puppies from anything tracked in from outside.
  • Strict punctuality — doors open just before class and late entry is capped, because a predictable routine is calmer for the puppies.

Questions worth asking any puppy yoga operator

If you're comparing experiences (in the GTA or anywhere), these questions separate careful operators from careless ones:

  • Where do the puppies come from, and what happens to them after the program?
  • Can puppies opt out of interaction freely during a session?
  • How many puppies per guest, and how big are classes?
  • What hygiene rules protect puppies from outside contamination?
  • Are guests coached on gentle handling?

We publish our approach on Our Standards page, and our team is happy to answer any of these questions in person — ask away at your next class.

See it for yourself

The best evidence is watching a class: puppies playing, napping mid-session, and choosing their favourite laps. That's what 521+ Google reviewers rated 4.9★. Find a class in Toronto, Vaughan, or Ajax — or read what to expect at your first class.
